Kimchi with Bread and Butter: From the Normalcy of the Abnormal

“Bread or Kimchi?” is the title of the 2006 undergraduate thesis of Annette Schubert. It studies Korean nurses who came to West Germany in the 1960s, some of whom later returned to South Korea, some of whom stayed. Bread stands for Germany, kimchi for Korea. What do the women choose—Germany or Korea?

Unexpected Encounters on the Island of Namhae

Red gable roofs, white stucco, half-timber construction, luscious gardens, dogs named Susi and Heidi. The women are eating coffee and cake at the table. In the 60s and 70s they worked as nurses in Frankfurt am Main, Berlin, and other places in Germany. When they returned, they and their husbands took with them the traditions of this once foreign country.
