The Border Area ? Possibilities of a Prominent Urban No-Man?s Land
“Where was the Berlin Wall, again?” 15 years after the fall of the Wall, this a question not only tourists asks. Berlin’s younger generation wants to know as well. After the Wende, the border apparatus was quickly dismantled, and pieces of the wall were cleared and sold abroad. Streets once cut off were connected again and new construction was planned along the border area. Official discussions focused on the quick connection of East and West Berlin and the reconstruction of the original city plan. What they ignored was a basic discussion about the possibilities of the border area that coursed through the city. The city senate wanted to make sure that the things reminding us of the Wall remained inconscpicuous.
