Mauerfall | Perception

Even though she was only 12, Yagmur Y.’s memory of the fall of Wall is still quite vivid. And she is convinced that the discussions triggered by the event were the reason she started to think about her roots. In her view, the reunification pushed non-Germans into the peripheries.

“My concept [of the Germans] began to change. Even with the East Berliners, among whom the discussion of the guest workers was so topical. Germany, second generation, ‘what do we do with the Turks we brought to our country.’ It’s no surprise that when you are constantly confronted with such attitudes you begin to really think about things.”

Nevim ?il, “The Other and the Foreign Outsider,” 68.
